We are in the land of the Saguaro. Wikipedia has a page on this cactus here. I have heard it takes 50 years or more for one of these to start sprouting "arms". Wikipedia reports this time frame as up to 75 years.
Many holes and ledges are found in the saguaro, pecked out by birds for nesting purposes.
And, they make great silhouettes for sunset photos.

That sunset is really neat Carol. We have some cactus in the campground we are in now. Will post some pictures when it warms up Cold here in south Texas
